Comic Con -trailers

Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah, five months early. The nice folks at Comic-Con have given us all a sled-load of shiny presents — in the form of brand spanking-new movie trailers. Now it’s time to unwrap the superheroes, super villains and super-familiar franchises coming soon. MaraMovies decides which trailers should be treasured . . .  or stashed under the bed until Comic-Con ’18. Yay, metaphors!

Thor: Ragnarok

Trailer talk Stop. Hammer time. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must win a duel against his old pal The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) so he can return to Asgard in time to stop sinister Hela (Cate Blanchett). BTW, Ragnarok = “the doom of the Asgardian civilization.”
Be excited because. . . This is the most generous glimpse yet of Blanchett as Hela, who calls herself the “goddess of death.” Blachett is a goddess, period.
Be concerned because.. . . The Hulk has more screen time here than the title character
See it November 3

Ready Player One

Trailer talk In the future, a destitute orphan (Tye Sheridan) escapes into a virtual reality world called Oasis to win a pop culture treasure hunt. A young sci-fi upstart named Steven Spielberg directs.
Be excited because. . . The trailer features the kid interacting with classic ‘80s relics such as Freddy Krueger and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Totally rad.
Be concerned because. . . I also spotted Lara Croft, Batman, Harley Quinn and the Iron Giant. Here’s hoping the most hidden Easter egg isn’t the actual story.
See it March 30

Justice League

Trailer talk Batman (Ben Affleck) recruits fellow superheroes Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and the Flash (Ezra Miller) to save the world against an intergalactic enemy. No pressure!
Be excited because…. Did I mention Wonder Woman? The 2017 summer box office queen rules the screen in this extended clip.
Be concerned because. . . An array of characters — J.K. Simmons barely gets out a line of dialogue — and busy CGI effects crowd the screen. This could either be an impressive superhero epic or an overambitious fail.

Bright

Story time Will Smith and Joel Edgerton plays LAPD cops that team up with an orc (seriously) to fend off human and otherworldly bad guys. This is a Netflix original.
Be excited because…. Will Smith has a beyond solid record when it comes to the buddy comedy genre.
Be concerned because. . . An orc?!!!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Trailer talk Members of the spy agency The Kingsman get as assist from their counterparts in the U.S., called the  Statesman. Together, they take on a villain (played by Julianne Moore).

Be excited because… The always-appealing Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges are the Statesmen. Already a step up from a hammy (and lisping) Samuel L. Jackson in the 2015 original.
Be concerned because… Yet another sequence in which bullets come flying in slow motion. Come on. This hasn’t looked cool since The Matrix.
See it September 22
