Live from Telluride: Matt Damon Shrinks Down In ‘Downsizing’

My hopes for Downsizing were higher than the Colorado mountains you see in the backdrop. Sad to report that Alexander Payne’s social satire — in which everyday lug Matt Damon shrinks down to five inches in hopes of recalibrating his life — is an overambitious disappointment. What starts out with infinite promise descends into an unfocused mishmash of ideas. Despite the December release date, I’m wary of its Oscar chances (in the main categories, anyway. Cool production design!) Here’s my early reaction from the Telluride Film Festival.
